This is the sacred craft

In surfing’s original days, it was seen as a sacred craft. Performed by priests, ceremonies were held along each step of the way, the final being a launching ceremony where all the latest boards were gathered at the shoreline in front of the village and blessed.

Much has changed since those sacred days and surfing has become a trend like everything else.

Here at Soto Surfcraft, we want to bring those sacred roots back to this beautiful activity. Where one person builds one board, start to finish.

The Shaping Process

The first step in this beautiful process is to go over with you the design best suited for your surfing goals, your future skill level, where you’d like to go, and where you surf the most. Every detail is taken into consideration when crafting a board specifically for you.

Custom boards are more than just a color.

Once your order is confirmed and we’re set on a design that you’re happy with, we will get to work shaping your new ride.

The Glassing Process

Once each board is shaped, it’ll be ready for the next step in the process, glassing. Each board is laminated and hot coated to the specific design unique to each customer, making their dream board just a short time away.

After the boards are wrapped in their glassing schedule, they’re ready to be hot coated and sanded. The sanding process brings out the fine beauty of each board.

The Hot Coating Process

Once your board is laminated, it will be hot-coated.

This step takes resin, surfacing agent, and catalyst to create the smooth look and feel of a surfboard.

The Sanding Process

Once hot-coated, your board is allowed to cure for 3 days before being sanded smooth. This is the final step in the board-building process. That is, unless the customer asks for a glossy shine, then the board will need polishing after it is given a second gloss coat.
